Spoiled Fruit · Week 6

In Your Anger

Our words carry extraordinary power. Anger, discord, and rage begin deeper than our outward behavior—and lasting change requires more than simply trying harder.

This Week's Message

James describes how very small things can wield tremendous power. A horse is directed by a bit, a large ship by a relatively small rudder, and an entire forest can be set ablaze by a tiny spark. He uses these images to show the enormous influence of the human tongue.

Our words may seem small, but they can steer relationships, wound others, spread conflict, and cause lasting damage. James reminds us that the tongue cannot simply be mastered through human effort alone.

Paul likewise warns believers against discord and rage. Anger itself is not automatically sinful, but anger can quickly become an expression of pride, selfishness, or a desire to impose our displeasure on someone else.

Ultimately, the answer is not merely greater self-control through willpower. As the Holy Spirit transforms us, the fruit of patience, gentleness, and self-control begins to crowd out the attitudes and actions of the flesh.

Scripture Text James 3:2–13

Four Things to Remember

01

Strife is more than disagreement.

Disagreement can be healthy when we are pursuing truth and peace. Strife is something different: a pattern of contentiousness driven by pride and the need to prove that we are right and someone else is wrong.

02

Angry outbursts inflict our displeasure on others.

Rage is more than simply feeling strongly. It resembles something boiling over—hotheaded anger that uses words or actions to force the weight of our displeasure onto someone else.

03

Rage begins in the soul.

Anger does not have to involve yelling. Withdrawal, coldness, and the silent treatment can arise from the same heart posture as a loud angry outburst. The issue begins internally before it appears externally.

04

The Spirit is stronger than willpower.

We cannot overcome anger simply by deciding to try harder. We need to fall deeper in love with Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to cultivate patience, gentleness, and self-control within us.

Discussion Questions

Use these questions personally, with your family, or in conversation with someone else this week.

1

How have you seen a “small” word or comment completely steer the direction of a relationship or a conversation?

2

How does giving someone the “cold shoulder” come from the same heart posture as a loud, angry outburst? Why is the silent treatment sometimes easier to justify?

3

How does the example of Jesus clearing the temple help us distinguish between righteous indignation and sinful, ego-driven anger?

Carry It Into the Week

Reflect

  • What does it mean to be discipled more by what is available on your phone than what is available in your Bible? How might your media intake fuel the “age of rage” around us?
  • Have you been harboring quiet discord by withdrawing from someone or acting cold toward them? Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart for hidden anger.

Practice

  • Audit your screen time this week alongside your time with the Lord and with other Christian brothers and sisters. Consider where you are most likely being discipled based on how you actually spend your time.
  • Instead of simply resolving to “try harder” to control your temper, identify one practical way you can fall deeper in love with Jesus, the source of patience, gentleness, and self-control.
